Charitable Giving in Married Couples: Untangling the Effects of Education and Income on Spouses’ Giving

This research note looks beyond the unitary household model and analyzes influence of resources by gender on charitable giving. We investigate intrahousehold variables income education their effects giving behaviors in married couples. use data from longitudinal Philanthropy Panel Study (2005–2017) to examine how spouses’ educational differences affect introduce fixed control for unobserved heterogeneity. Initially, we find a positive relationship between both husband’s wife’s earned unearned incomes likelihood amount However, when are used, women’s be significantly associated with all forms giving, showing that labor market earnings disproportionately behavior. Education is less factor whether couples give influences only husband has more than wife.
